Artistic Director & Chief Conductor – Ryley Gillen
Ryley Gillen is a passionate conductor, trumpeter and educator. Having worked extensively for the last ten years in regional NSW as a music educator Ryley has conducted for the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music, Goulburn Regional Conservatorium and acted as Assistant Musical Conductor for the Sydney Conservatorium of Music.
For his involvement in the creative arts in regional areas Ryley was recognised as a finalist for the 2018 NSW Creative Achievement Awards; Young Creative and in 2019 was appointed to the Classical Music Advisory Board for Create NSW.
Since 2014 Ryley has been Artistic Director and Chief Conductor of the Wollongong based ballet company Illawarra On Pointe Productions, currently serves as Manager of the Shoalhaven Youth Orchestra and is a trumpeter for the NSW Department of Justice.
Ryley has musically directed for several independent companies and recently was a CAT Awards finalist (Best Musical Direction, The Addams Family AMTC, 2019). As conductor Ryley’s ballet credits include: The Nutcracker (IOP 2016), Peter Pan (IOP 2018), The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (IOP 2021). His musical credits include The Addams Family (AMTC 2019) Mary Poppins (AMTC 2018), Witches of Eastwick (Roo Theatre 2018), South Pacific: In Concert (IOP 2017), Chess: In Concert (Roo Theatre 2017), Next To Normal (Arcadians Theatre 2015), Gypsy (Roo Theatre 2014). Most recently Ryley performed trumpet in Noteable Theatre Company’s return season of Les Mis at the Concourse, Chatswood (2021).
Ryley is excited to be taking up the baton for the Sutherland Shire Symphony Orchestra and is looking forward to continuing to grow the orchestra and the platform SSSO facilitates for community members to excel in orchestral performance.
